The Creating a Habit of Reading program has skillfully been structured to encourage and build a love of reading, specifically independent reading in a short amount of time. Each themed activity picture book exposes children K-3 or K-6 to our tailored intervention approach called HECTIC. HECTIC is a structured, science-based framework designed to help students master foundational literacy skills essential for fluent, confident reading. It follows the principles of the Science of Reading, which emphasizes evidence-based approaches for effective literacy instruction. HECTIC stands for High-Frequency words, Encoding & Decoding, Comprehension, Text Fluency, Integrated Vocabulary, and Contextual Application. Each component works together to provide a comprehensive, engaging program that supports literacy growth from kindergarten through sixth grade.
Each book is a systematic progression that encompasses skill building. Our pre-reading books are wordless, allowing children to use their imaginations and to encourage discussion. Each vibrantly illustrated page is coupled with one to two discussion questions that will assist with creating an engaging and welcoming reading experience. After the pre-reading books(3), Book One begins with familiarity - the letter A and animals. However, children are quickly exposed to writing, speaking, letter identification, phonics, and sentence structures to begin building a love of reading. As children progress they are exposed to a variety of topics that include weather, self-love, family, and more. Before any reading begins children are met with an affirmation page that says “I Can Read” - this positive affirmation sets the stage for positivity and removes any negative ideas that children may have about learning to read.
Teacher and Parent Benefits:
Instead of a reading program that needs added resources, printouts, and worksheets the program created by a teacher for teachers has included all resources within the books. These resources include activity pages to reinforce learning, teacher verbiage, lesson plans, discussion questions, writing pages, coloring pages, links to additional resources tailored specifically to what children are learning including PPTs, online games and other material to enhance learning.
A teacher guide can be included to help guide the enriching approach to teaching a love of reading through the books in the program.
