Course Description:
This course is designed to help parents and education engagement leaders to teach children how to read starting with letter identification. It will provide practical tips and strategies for teaching children how to recognize and identify letters, as well as how to use this knowledge to develop necessary reading skills.
The course is suitable for parents, educators, and community organizations desiring to teach or improve reading skills in children aged 3-6 years, struggling readers, and ESL students.
Course Outline:
The primary goal of this course is to provide practical strategies for creating inclusive and stimulating learning environments that foster the development of proficient readers. Beginning with foundational literacy skills and progressing through advanced reading techniques, the course offers a comprehensive breakdown of the process of teaching children to read. The course starts with an exploration of alphabet recognition and progresses to blending exercises, ultimately leading to proficient reading skills. Through engaging discussions, participants are encouraged to exchange ideas, share methods, and explore available resources. Brief quizzes are included to assess comprehension and reinforce learning objectives. Dr. Qiana Gray is a university professor based in Los Angeles, California. She earned her Doctorate in Reading and Literacy in 2017, following a Master's degree focused on Technology Integration and Engagement in Learning. With one year of experience in Mexico and nine years in South Korea, Dr. Gray's passion and dedication led her to South Africa, where she worked on integrating technology into classrooms, developing engaging learning opportunities, and fostering a love of reading and writing both within and outside the school environment. With an M.A. in Technology Integration and an Ed.D. in Reading and Literacy, Dr. Gray is driven by her commitment to enhancing both classroom and home environments related to reading. Her passion lies in cultivating critical thinkers and fostering a love for learning.
